Modal Verb 

Modal Verb เป็นกริยาช่วยซึ่งนำมาใช้ร่วมกับคำกริยาหลัก และต้อง  คำนึงถึงสถานการณ์ด้วย เพราะคำกริยาเหล่านี้จะมีความหมาย ตามแต่สถานการณ์ที่ใช้  

Modal Verb จำง่ายๆอักษรภาษาไทย 4 ตัว คือ ว ช ค ม  = will/would , shall/should , can/could , may/might/must

หลักในการใช้ Modal Verb

การใช้ modal v. จะต้องดูสถานการณ์ด้วย มีหลักง่ายๆ ดังนี้

1. การใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่ อาจเกิดขึ้นได้ สามรถเกิดได้ ในอนาคต ได้แก่

will
shall
can            +          V.inf
 may                              

2. การใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่สมมติขึ้น ปราถนาให้เกิด คาดคะเน ในอดีต ได้แก่

would
should
could          +          V.inf
might

3. การใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นตรงข้ามกับอดีต ได้แก่

would
should
could          +          have   +V.3
might

**นอกจาก modal v. ที่กล่าวมาข้างต้นแล้ว ยังมี modal v. ตัวอื่นที่เราจะเจออีก เช่น

• Ought  to  +  have  +  V3             แสดงสิ่งที่ควรทำในอดีต  แต่ไม่ได้ทำ
• Would  rather  +  have  +  V3       อยากทำแต่ความจริงไม่ได้กระทำ  (อดีต)
• needn’t  +  have  +  V3                แสดงสิ่งที่ทำไปแล้วทั้งที่ไม่จำเป็นต้องทำ  (อดีต)
• didn’t  have  to  =  didn’t  need  to        ไม่จำเป็นต้องกระทำ  และก็ไม่ได้กระทำ(ในอดีต)
• needn’t  have  done                              ไม่จำเป็นต้องกระทำ  แต่ก็ทำไปแล้ว  (ในอดีต)
