Official death toll from tsunamis reaches nearly 5,200
BANGKOK, Jan 4 (TNA) - The official death toll from last week's tsunamis has reached nearly 5,200, with over 8,000 injured and nearly 4,000 still missing. According to the latest figures from the government's tsunami relief centre yesterday evening, 5,187 people died in the tragedy, while 8,457 were still injured and 3,810 remained missing. Phang-nga bore the brunt of the disaster, with 4,077 deaths and 5,597 injured. Thailand's six southern Andaman provinces were hit--unprecedentedly--by the tsunamis, caused by one of the world's strongest earthquakes in the Indonesian resort island of Sumatra, on 26 December. They include Phuket, Phang-nga, Krabi, Trang, Ranong and Satun. (TNA)--E002
